                             Release Date: August 9, 2016

                              Book Blurb:

brynAs the daughter of a meth dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. Struggling to raise her little brother, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible “adult” around. She finds peace in the starry Midwestern night sky above the fields behind her house. One night everything changes when she witnesses one of her father’s thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold, wreck his motorcycle. What follows is a powerful and shocking love story between two unlikely people that asks tough questions, reminding us of all the ugly and wonderful things that life has to offer.

My Review:

I questioned whether to recommend this book because the subject matter is controversial, and made me feel uncomfortable. With excellent execution and sensitive maneuvering the author deserves her review.

Neglectful and abusive meth addicts raise the main character Wavy. The ranch she lives on is also a meth-cooking lab. Wavy basically fends for herself and is forced to grow up quickly while tending to her younger brother. One of her father’s associates, Kellen, takes notice of her disgusting living conditions, and tries to improve things. He buys groceries for the household, makes sure Wavy has shoes, and goes to school everyday. This relationship develops over the years and Wavy learns to trust and rely on Kellen. This relationship defines the book.

The subject matter at times makes this a tough read. Do I not recommend it? A part of me says yes, a part of me says no. It made me think, it made me feel different things, and that is why I am blogging about it. I’m interested to know what others think about this one.
